During The Walking Dead Preview Special on AMC on Sunday, showrunner Scott Gimple calmed some fan nerves about the twist in the show’s Season 8 trailer. Immediately after host Chris Hardwick pointed out that fans are suspecting Rick Grimes of awakening from his coma in the final moments of the Season 8 trailer, making the events of the 99 Walking Dead episodes a dream sequence which never happened, Gimple ruled out such a scenario.

Showrunner Scott Gimple explained to TV Line: ”Because of the narrative that we’re following, the story this season is really spread out among all of the characters.” “We’ll see characters affect one another that we haven’t seen affect one another before, or even just thrown together than we haven’t seen thrown together.” Viewers were shocked to see Rick with grey hair, a beard and a cane and were overwhelmed with questions as the clip closed. Rick Grimes was seen as an old man, but it wasn’t explained how.

As for whether audiences will learn more this season about what the Rick image means, Kirkman replied, “I’m pretty sure you’ll learn in the first episode what that means.” How will this season keep the show fresh as it enters season 8? “We’ve got all these different factions, all these different locations, we’ve got the Hilltop, we’ve got the Sanctuary, and I think [we’re] getting all these people together and continuing to expand the scale in a cool way, but really using all these pieces to their fullest,”

He further said. “We’ve spent a lot of time setting these characters up, and now we’re going to bash them against each other and see what happens. One of the things that really keeps The Walking Dead going is that every season feels like a different show. As we start to show more promotional material, and as you guys get to see episodes, you’ll see this is another continuation of that, this is a very fresh take on the world of The Walking Dead, and we’re going to be breaking a lot of new ground this season.”
